Terrence Shaw scored 30 points and Derrick Brooks added 18 of his own as the Grand Rapids Danger welcomed the Chicago Fury to Beer City, USA on Saturday but showed their guests no hospitality in a 117-73 win.
Jamel Hatchett, Kulawndie Saunders and Bradley Whitby joined Brooks in welcoming newcomers Shaw, DeArmond Davis, Jorddan Myrick and Alex Mustert to the rotation in coach Forrest Saunders’ high energy system as Grand Rapids opened the game on a 9-0 run and never looked back. Brooks, coming off the bench, scored 11 points in the first quarter and pushed the Danger to a 35-8 lead.
Shaw made his mark in the second with his low post play and defensive rebounding. He even threw down a couple of highlight dunks on his way to 10 points in the quarter. By halftime, it was 62-33 and the Danger had taken total control of the game. Myrick scored all 9 of his points in the first half.
Shaw continued his dominance after halftime, adding another 14 points in the third quarter. The Fury did their best to make a comeback, but could only manage a slight recession in the Danger’s lead, losing the quarter 28-26 and falling behind 90-59.
In the fourth quarter, Mustert led the way with eight points as the Danger won the final 12 minutes 27-14 to complete the 44-point win in front of a near-packed house at Grace Bible College.
