In the final regular season game for the ABA’s 12th-ranked Grand Rapids Danger (13-5) , the 6th-ranked Windy City Groove (13-1) wouldn’t be stopped in a 40-point 3rd quarter and took home a 115-103 victory at Grace Bible College in Grand Rapids, MI.
Nate Fuqua was the preeminent player on the floor from tip-off to the final buzzer, scoring 13 points in the first, 14 in the third and 11 in the fourth quarter to finish the night with a game-high 40 points. Windy City had five other players in double figures as Lavontae Douglas (18), Adonis Bailey (16), Jeremy Saffold (14), Javony Austin (12) and Derrick McDonald (11) joined Fuqua’s effort in the victory.
Terrence Shaw led the charge for the Danger scoring 31 points. Jamel Hatchett (18), Bradley Whitby (16) and Derrick Brooks (15) all scored in double digits for Grand Rapids, but the team overall had a rough day.
After trailing by as many as 12 points in the first quarter, Grand Rapids got back within two points at the half, 49-47.
After the break the Groove went haywire in the scoring column and on the defensive end. Windy City used their half-court trapping defense to turn over the Grand Rapids guards three straight times, leading to three consecutive “3-D” baskets, stretching their lead by nine points. The Groove scored 40 points in the third quarter, held the Danger to only 21 and grew their lead to 89-68 at the start of the fourth. In the final 12 minutes, Grand Rapids fought hard to erase the deficit but could only get back within six points on two different occasions. The visitors used all of their big lead, made it to the double bonus (Fuqua made seven free throws in the final period) and kept the Danger at arm’s length in the final minutes.
With the regular season now over, the Danger await word from the ABA office to find out their playoff status, game time and location, all TBD.
