New head coach Robert Werdann will have his hands full for the next 60+ days getting his team ready for some tough matchups and interesting opponents. The league schedule opens on Friday, November 3.
The Drive open the season at home, playing at the DeltaPlex Arena, when they face off against a familiar opponent, albeit one that has undergone a re-identification and will arrive with a completely different background. The Erie Bayhawks, whose original franchise was purchased by the Orlando Magic and later moved to Lakeland, FL, has been re-opened as an expansion team after the Atlanta Hawks made the move onto the list of NBA teams who own their own affiliate.
Later that weekend, the defending G League champion Raptors 905 visit for the first of two Sunday afternoon games on Nov. 5.
League newcomer Wisconsin Herd, the affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, come to town on Dec. 4 and the Drive travel to the Cheese State on Dec. 20.
In what may be the biggest game of the G League season for Grand Rapids’ players and coaches, the Drive will face the Ft. Wayne Mad Ants, affiliate of the Indiana Pacers, on February 28, 2018 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, MI, the new home of the Pistons with a 1:00 PM tip-off.
After a three-game road trip, the Drive and Mad Ants meet again in GR for the Meijer School Day game on March 13, with the game starting at 11 a.m.
The NBA G League Showcase 2018 returns for its second straight year to Mississauga, Ontario on January 10-13, 2018, where the Drive will play two additional games. Hopefully, at least for the staff here at BeerCityHoops, the Drive will face off against the Northern Arizona Suns and the South Bay Lakers. Dates, times and opponents will be released at a later date.
The 2018 All-Star Weekend takes place this season in Los Angeles on February 16th -18th.
