Knights get first MIAA win of 2018
Saturday afternoon in mid-central Michigan, the Calvin Knights (5-8 overall, 1-1 MIAA) got into the win column in MIAA conference play with a 80-63 win over the Alma Scots (4-9 overall, 1-1 MIAA).
The Knights shined defensively, holding the Scots 13 points under their season average and causing 19 Alma turnovers while recording six blocks and winning the battle of the boards.
Luke Morrison led Calvin with 23 points, nine rebounds and five assists while shooting 8-of-17, including 5-of-10 from deep.
“We had great intensity to start the game on defense and that really set the tone for our team,” Calvin coach Kevin Vande Streek said after the game. “Morrison gave us a big scoring punch but we had several other guys step up when we needed them too. It was a great team win.”
Austin Bykerk and Jason Walter each scored 12 points. Derrick DeVries added 11 points and nine rebounds.
The team now has to turn their attention toward rival Hope. Wednesday night at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse, the ball tips at 8 p.m. in the 197th meeting between the two teams in men’s basketball. Hope leads the series, 101-95.
