Coming home from opening weekend of deer camp empty-handed.
That’s where the Calvin College men’s basketball program finds itself after the opening weekend of 2017-18 hoops.
The Knights, coming off an exhibition win against crosstown NCCAA powerhouse Grace Bible College, had expectations of a Friday night battle to the wire with #2-ranked Augustana (IL). What they got was the #2-ranked team in the country.
The NCAA Div. III semi-finalist shot out to a 21-4 lead in the opening minutes of the game and although they allowed Calvin within 39-31 at the half, the Vikings controlled the scoreboard throughout the second half.
Freshman Luke Morrison led the Knights with 18 points. The team committed 17 turnovers in the loss.
Saturday night, Calvin visited Illinois Wesleyan. The Knights and Titans traded the lead 11 times in the first half with the Titans taking a 14-point lead at one point and holding a 45-35 margin at the half. Calvin fought hard to get back within one but IWU had a retaliatory answer for whatever offensive scheme the Knights used. After growing the lead to 19 points, IWU held on for a 94-82 win and move to 3-0 overall. Calvin falls to 0-2.
Austin Bykerk and Derrick DeVries each scored 15 points to lead the Knights.
The Knights are back on the court Tuesday. Calvin welcomes Wheaton (Ill.) in their home opener. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
