The Cornerstone Golden Eagles are back.

Coming out of the gates with two losses last week, the #1-ranked team in NAIA Div. II let it be known that they’re not falling stars with a back-to-back weekend sweep of #3-ranked St. Francis College and #2-ranked Union College at the Northern Lakes Insurance Tournament in Fort Wayne, IN.

CU shot just 37% in the first half but rallied for a 50% clip in the second. They opened the second half on a 19-4 run and stretched the lead to 13 points at 52-39. But, St. Francis retaliated with a 15-point run of their own and regained the lead late in the game. Cornerstone fought back with a 7-2 run to take the lead for good.

“We played solid on the defensive end and then offensively it was hard to come by as USF is a great team, especially on their home court. This is a nice win”, coach Kim Elders said, despite the teams’ 19 turnovers.

Rodriguez played his best game of his young career, scoring 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting (4-of-7 from deep). Steigenga added 13 points and Sam Vander Sluis netted 9 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, blocked 6 shots and dished out 4 assists on the night.

On Saturday, the team faced off with Union College (Ky.) for a 2 p.m. matinée. Cornerstone came away with a 69-54 win.
