The Cornerstone Golden Eagles men’s basketball team find themselves in a very familiar position. They’ve been named the favorite to win the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference by the league’s coaches.
Coming off a heartbreaking loss in the National Championship game to the Union (Ky.) Bulldogs, coach Kim Elders returns to the sidelines for his 25th season looking for a 10th regular season title in the WHAC.
All-American standout Kyle Steigenga leads the way for the Golden Eagles, also returning are big man Sam Vander Sluis and sharp-shooters Michael Bradshaw and Riley Coston. Locals Christian Rodriguez (Godwin Heights) and Nick Dekkenga (Coopersville) join the mix as incoming freshmen, as well as Bellaire’s Gabe Merriweather.
Cornerstone received every first-place vote in the poll:

The Rochester Warriors, the newest team added to the WHAC, finished second. UM-Dearborn ranked third and the Aquinas Saints finished fourth.
Cornerstone begins the season on October 27th against Illinois Wesleyan at Spring Arbor University during the WHAC/CL Challenge. They’ll open play at home at Mol Arena on November 9th when they host Alma.
