Detroit Pistons and Grand Rapids Drive extend relationship for two years

Earlier today, the Detroit Pistons announced that they have reached an agreement to extend their affiliate relationship with the NBA G League’s Grand Rapids Drive for another two seasons.

Per team policy, terms of agreements were not disclosed.

The Drive have won 70 games while losing 80 during their time in Grand Rapids after stints as the Springfield Armor (87-161 record/2009-2014) and the Anaheim Arsenal (61-89/2006-2009). The franchise has only made the playoffs on one occasion, after their 29-21 season in 2011-12, where they lost to the Canton Charge 2-1 in the first round.

After two years of just missing out on a .500 record under the guidance of Otis Smith, the Drive went 26-24 in 2016-17 under first year head coach Rex Walters, who was promoted to the Pistons’ coaching staff just like his predecessor.

Rob Werdann was named to replace Walters at the helm.
