#15 Derek Brooks is a 6’3″, SF/PF from Northview HS, GRCC and Davenport University.
He has taken a long path to get to the Grand Rapids Danger, but Brooks perseverance is admirable.
The 2006 graduate led the Wildcats to conference, district and regional championships while at Northview, earning OK-White All-Conference three seasons in a row. After a season at GRCC where he averaged 16.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 2.0 steals per game, Brooks went through a series of injuries and accidents that led to his departure from the basketball scene. But in 2011 then-DU coach Burt Paddock noticed Brooks, someone he’d recruited while at GVSU, working out with former players. That chance meeting turned out to be the break Brooks needed to get back into the college hoops scene here in GR. So, on to Davenport he would go after agreeing to and then finishing his Associates Degree at GRCC. The elder statesman on the team, Brooks averaged 5.6 points over 43 games, eight of which he started for the Panthers.
Brooks played last year with the Grand Rapids Fusion of the IBA, under the tutelage of former NBA player Reggie Jordan and Fusion coach Marco Wilkinson.
