Galaxy Dodgers home game 2017

Sunday afternoon marks the opening game in the history of women’s professional basketball here in Beer City, USA as the Grand Rapids Galaxy (4-2) play host to the Detroit Dodgers. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at the DeltaPlex Arena.

WoodTV’s Teri Deboer, Galaxy owner William Kelly, asst. coach Nikki Thompkins and player Felicia Thomas on the set of eightWest on May 24, 2017.

Before heading off last Wednesday for a 3-game set over Memorial Day weekend, the Galaxy sent representatives to meet and greet with Teri DeBoer and the Wood TV8 team over at eightWest on Monday, May 24. Owner William Kelly, assistant coach and local legend Nikki Thompkins and player Felicia Thomas found themselves in the bright lights in our “big city” while talking about the season and the upcoming home opener.

The team followed up the appearance by heading over to Helen DeVos Childrens’ Hospital to spend time with some of the kids there, playing video games, cards and skillfully wielding their arts and crafts skills.

Early Wednesday morning the team loaded up and found their way out of town and on the long road to Missouri at the home of the Kansas City Majestics later that night, a mere 10-hours after leaving the GR area.

After a change of opponents, the Galaxy started off with a game against the Music City Icons form Memphis, TN at Ellsbury HS and found themselves up 42-30 at the half. (Check out William Kelly’s FB Live video above.) In the second half, GR put up another 57 points while holding the Icons to just 21 on their way to a 99-51 victory, their third of the season. With precious little time to sit back and celebrate the victory, the ladies kept their game faces on for day two of the trip, but found a moment to visit the Gateway Arch before the team meal at Sweetie Pie’s in St. Louis and strike a pose.

Game two saw the arrival of the Midwest Flyers and, unfortunately, a dismal performance by the Galaxy. The Flyers put a beating on GR, 99-63.

On Friday, game three brought to the floor the South Carolina Storm. The Galaxy and coach Dan Thornton were back in the flow after the tough loss to the Flyers and took out their frustrations on the Storm in the first half. The 57-26 score was indicative of how the team felt going in to the matchup. The final was 101-78.

Grand Rapids finished the trip 2-1 and is now 4-2 overall in their inaugural season.

Doors open at the DeltaPlex on Sunday at 2 p.m. and game time is 3 p.m. with tickets starting at $10.
