HOLLAND, MI — With only two weeks remaining until its official season opener, GRFC dropped a 1-0 decision to the host Hope College Flying Dutchmen on Friday evening at the Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
Although Grand Rapids controlled the ball most of the game, they couldn’t put the ball in the net. Hope, on the other hand, played behind the ball for the counter-attack. The strategy proved worthwhile for the Flying Dutchmen as a breakaway for forward David White resulted in a goal and a 1-0 lead to the hosts in the 25th minute.
“I don’t think Hope had a lot of chances because they defended with a lot of numbers,” said GRFC head coach George Moni. “They based their game strategy on a counter-attacking situation, and when we over-committed too many players we recognized we were unable, in certain situations, to defend properly.”
