Otis Smith in discussions with Sacramento Kings for VP job

Otis Smith, the former head coach of the Grand Rapids Drive and currently on staff for Detroit Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy, has been in contact with the Sacramento Kings about their open vice president of operations position, league sources told ESPN.

Kings GM Vlade Divac is searching for an executive to place in the #2 spot in the organization after Scott Perry left to take a leading position for the New York Knicks.

After leading the Pistons’ NBA G League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Drive, for their first two seasons in Beer City, USA, Smith spent last season in Detroit with Van Gundy.

Previously, Smith was the General Manager of the Orlando Magic for six seasons, including a 299-177 record and a trip to the 2009 NBA Finals. Smith was dismissed in 2012 after the Magic’s dealings with Dwight Howard, his free agency soap opera and eventual departure.
