Otis Smith, former head coach of the Grand Rapids Drive, the NBADL affiliate of the Detroit Pistons, is joining the coaching staff of Stan Van Gundy in Detroit. Smith confirmed the appointment during our interview yesterday. Smith joins the Pistons’ staff as director of player development/assistant coach.

The Pistons announced the decision this morning, also giving promotions to Pat Garrity, Andrew Loomis and Bob Beyer, transitioning Brendan Malone to special scout and Quentin Richardson will leave the staff.

Van Gundy, speaking of the moves,

“I’m proud to announce the restructuring of our basketball staff knowing that we have great people expanding their roles while maintaining continuity within our department. Pat, Andrew and Bob are well deserving of new responsibilities and we welcome Otis to Detroit on a full-time basis. Brendan is moving away from the bench and returning to his New York roots, but will continue to provide great basketball counsel and insight that has made him a great basketball mind for decades. We thank Quentin for his hard work over the last two seasons and respect his desire to spend more time with his family in Orlando.”

Smith spent the last two seasons as head coach of the Drive, leading them to a 44-56 record overall. Smith served as GM of the Orlando Magic from 2010-12 and reached the NBA Finals in 2009.
