On Saturday, the Detroit Red Wings assigned defensemen Robbie Russo and Filip Hronek to the Grand Rapids Griffins, recalled defenseman Dan Renouf and forward Dominik Shine from the Griffins and released forward Corey Elkins from his professional tryout, returning him to Grand Rapids in time for training camp.
Russo played in 58 games for Grand Rapids last season before being called up to Detroit to see action in 19 games. Hornet played with Saginaw in the OHL before arriving in GR to make 10 appearances with the Griffins. Elkins played for HIFK Helsinki in Finland last year, accumulating 23 points (4 goals, 19 assists) in 41 contests.
When Grand Rapids makes its practice debut at Van Andel Arena on Monday, Russo and Hronek join some other familiar faces on the ice.
Forwards Mike Borkowski and Zach Nastasiuk and defenseman Patrick McCarron return to Grand Rapids after spending time with the Griffins last season.
Meanwhile, the Griffins assigned goaltender Pat Nagle and defenseman Kevin Tansey to the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye.
The Griffins will raise their 2017 Calder Cup championship banner and begin the defense of their title on Friday, Oct. 6 at Van Andel Arena against Manitoba when the puck drops on the 2017-18 season with Opening Night presented by Huntington Bank.
