Coming off the Thanksgiving holiday and the mess that is Black Friday, the Grand Rapids Danger hosted the Detroit Coast II Coast All-Stars Saturday night at Grace Bible College, losing 113-111 and ending their three game winning streak.
The Danger were a bit shorthanded without Aaron Carter and DaunTrel Hill due to the holiday schedule but got off to a great start behind Kulawndie Saunders‘ 3-point barrage. Unlike the game two weeks ago against Team Network, Coast II Coast turned up the defensive pressure early and often wreaking havoc on the Danger’s guards. Jamel Hatchett and Mario Smith were under constant pressure in the backcourt, even falling victim to the ABA’s 7-second rule and turning the ball over more than once. Although the Danger lead at the end of each quarter, the All-Stars fought hard to erase a late 10-point deficit and win the game, holding off Grand Rapids’ furious comeback attempt in the final minute.
Matt Stoll led the Danger with 31 points and Saunders added 29 of his own, mostly in the first half and the final two minutes.
The loss drops the #8-ranked GR Danger to 4-2 overall in their inaugural season. They will head south next weekend to play the Chicago Steam on Sunday at 5pm CST. The Danger will return home to Grace Bible College on December 12th against the Libertyville Vipers.
