Scores, statistics and news from Beer City Hoops’ the GR3G league, a 3-on-3 event on the west side of Grand Rapids, MI

Week 4 Recap: the Gr3g League

With the winter weather lifting a little bit early in the late weeks of February, the winds of change bring a newfound level of pressure that arrived on the scene suddenly on court Tuesday night at the Knapp Shack.

In Game 1, the Hawks hosted the Nines in the first 4v4 matchup of the season. With no subs, the Nines paced themselves to a nice lead just after half but watched as the red jerseys completed a second half comeback to send the game to overtime. Los, who finished with 28 points, scored the first four points in the extra period and MJ, who led all scorers with 31 points, put the final pickle in the bucket to seal the victory, 74-68. Bandit (20), Mr94Feet (15) & the Berlin Wall (12) all reached double figures.

Due to the shortened schedule the Hawks were back on the court in Game 2, this time facing off against the Greens. This game’s tempo took a slow roll to a 49-48 Greens lead with just seconds to go. On the last inbounds of the game, the Hawks last shot attempt went awry and the green Ligers escaped with the victory as Moten led the way with 21 points. Bandit scored 23 for the Hawks.

League leaders City of Bridges walked onto the court in the final game of the night to take on the Crew but limped off after an offensive 2nd quarter where they went scoreless. The Crew has found their point guard in Ureste, who finished with 23 points, and a go-to guy in Jackson Sr., who led all scorers with 28. City’s own Jackson continued his double-digit scoring streak with 11 to lead the Bridges.

Heading towards the last week of the first half, the standings look as follows:

Report: Buzz looking to add draft picks

News coming out of the Buzz camp is that ownership and management are contemplating a complete rebuild of the roster for the 2021 season.

With the completion of pre-season games, the upcoming Draft becomes the building block for the newest expansion team in the Gr3g League. The “buzz around town”, pardon our theft Mr. Goebel, is that both Sam Awry and B Stacks could be on the move as soon as Thursday night.

The Yellow Jackets could add as many as 3 picks for each player and set themselves up for a run at a title in 2022.

The Buzz is currently located outside Broadleaf Beer in Grand Rapids, MI.

Check the “Broad Board” for a free pint from the League, if you’re In Gear AND Pay It Forward!

We’ve cancelled all scheduled events until October 2020.

We already miss you.

It’s only been a couple days since the council decided it was time to cancel Opening Day and just yesterday the decision was made to cancel the entire schedule of theGR3Gleague for the summer of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic spreading across our world right now.

With the help of our colleagues at the City of Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Department, we’ve been able to keep our league intact. All of our funding comes directly from donations, product investments, and sales including via our Poshmark store. The City was very gracious in refunding the cost of facilities. We will gladly support the Parks Dept. throughout our future ventures and thank them for their hospitality.

While we don’t have any safe, healthy options to get together and hoop out at the local parks together, we still have online capabilities to share your best basketball videos from the front yard, basement, inside the barn, laundry rooms or your indoor mini court!

Stay tuned to our media feed for some upcoming fun from all around the Dirty Water Tavern, the studio, basement booze closet, Chet’s front porch, and maybe even a virtual debate in the near future. Care to join us? Send an e-mail to info@beercityhoops.com or use the website to REGISTER for theGR3Gleague or join the Facebook Group: GR3G hoops.

The rules of the GR3G league 3-on-3 are as follows:

  • games are played on a half-court
  • the GR3G league uses the on-court arc (usually 19’9″), with shots from outside the arc worth 2 points and inside worth 1 point
  • shots from designated “3G” circles (located at 23′) are worth three-points, a player must take the shot from inside the circle
  • determined by brewery locations, the nearest “home” team inbounds first
  • shot clock runs 33 seconds (where available)
  • shooting foul creates one free throw per number of points as the shot, all free throws are worth 1 point and are taken from the free throw line
  • players receive one dead-ball free throw if fouled on a made shot, possession will then change
  • players are allowed 3 personal fouls before fouling out (casual, competitive builds rapport, relationships)
  • teams must begin the game with 3 players and may finish with only one player
  • to win, a team must score exactly 33 points or the opposing team runs out of players/forfeits
  • halftime happens as one team reaches 21 points
  • each team receives two 60-second timeouts
  • substitutions can be made on a dead ball or by calling timeout
  • the referee must distribute the ball to the opposing team beyond the 23′ arc line after each score
  • the inbounding player is free to dribble or pass the ball inbounds
  • defensive rebounds/steals must be cleared only if the ball touched the rim, the ball is cleared when the opposing player with the ball establishes both feet behind the 3-point line
  • all defensive strategies are allowed
  • we use a size 29.5 game ball
