The Year 6 Rules Update

Welcome to the Gr3g League, where competition meets community and respect for the game is at the heart of every matchup.

Below are the official rules and guidelines for both in-game play and off-court conduct in the BeerCityHoops 5v5 league.

In-Game Rules

Game Format

  • Games are played on a full court with 5-on-5 teams.
  • Teams must field at least 4 players. Games may be played 4v4 if necessary, or teams may allow substitutions.
  • The first team to score 63 points wins, or the team ahead after 33 minutes is declared the winner.
  • Each game is played with a 33-minute running clock.

Scoring

  • Shots made inside the arc are worth 2 points.
  • Shots made outside the arc are worth 3 points.
  • Shots made beyond the special “3G” line (inside half-court circle) activate a “Make It, Take It” rule.

Possession and Play

  • After a dead ball, the defense must always return the live ball to the offense behind mid-court to restart play.
  • The offense may dribble, shoot, or pass to start play, reducing the risk of injuries from inbounds plays.
  • Substitutions are only allowed during a dead ball.

Fouls and Timeouts

  • Players are expected to “call your own” fouls.
  • Avoid being a “violations czar” or an overzealous referee.
  • Each team is allowed one 60-second timeout per game.

Defense and Strategy

  • All half-court defensive strategies are permitted, though man-to-man defense is preferred.
  • Ball movement is encouraged. Stalling in the final minutes is discouraged—open shots should be taken.

Overtime

  • Overtime consists of 3 minutes and 33 seconds or ends when the first team scores 7 points.
  • The home team shoots from the top of the key to determine possession at the start of overtime.

On/Off-Court Rules

Sportsmanship and Conduct

  • Do it like Stuart Scott: “Be as cool as the other side of the pillow.”
  • Show respect for the game, fellow players, opposing teams, and the gym facilities.
  • Bring hustle to the court, not harm—remember, everyone has commitments off the court.

Safety and Behavior

  • Any and all threatening behavior will result in immediate expulsion from the league.
  • Know your scheduled game times and arrive on time.
  • Teams will be given approximately 10 minutes to warm up before games.
  • Stay off the court, including baselines, while live games are in progress.

Summary

The Gr3g League is built on respect, hustle, and a love for basketball. These rules are designed to ensure fair play, safety, and a positive experience for everyone involved. Play hard, play fair, and enjoy the game!

Year 6 of the Gr3g League will officially begin July 1 with new JERSEY rules

New player recruiting, trades & transactions begin today

Summer Hoops begins Tuesday June 19th at cherry park after 5p

The start of Year 6 (2025-26) is less than a month away!!

Go outside and play. INDOOR HOOPS RETURNS IN OCTOBER.

Are you keeping yourself in shape, any shape at all? I’m a beer barrel.

Don’t worry, it’s still golf season (see below for the 3G Challenge).

But if you’re ready to get to hooping, summer recruiting runs begin Tuesday June 19th at Cherry Park (Cherry/Eastern SE) sometime after 5p. Hopefully we’ll see you out at Cherry, Wilcox, Garfield, MLK or wherever we end up each week.

Check out the BeerCityHoops FB page if you don’t get the text messages.

These summer runs are YOUR recruiting season! It’s a real pain in the admin when players bring random newbies along to hoop. This happened in multiple Finals games this season.

Player are now eligible to seek “trades” or “free agent signings” but they must play NICE:

  1. NOTIFY League office that you have interest to switch teams.
  2. INITIATE Contact Teams to find a good fit, gauge interest, League prefers TRADE before FA Signing.
  3. CONFIRM The Details and Compensation, it is not finished until the League office signs off
  4. EXECUTE and Finalize the Deal by purchasing your new BeerCityHoops jersey through the League office.

Current players moving teams must pre-pay $77 fee to cover the cost of their new jersey.

As we move into Year 6, the League is making the following jersey requirements:

  • all players must have a custom BeerCityHoops jersey to participate in League play
  • each current player (Years 1-5) with their own custom BeerCityHoops jersey are now “lifetime” members of the League
  • these players, in good standing, will pay only gym dues each season (variable cost) before Week 1 (mid-October)
  • new players (your cost is $200, includes admin/season dues/jersey) and/or returning players ($77) without a BeerCityHoops jersey must purchase one through the league before membership is granted.

Players may design new jerseys on your own but will need approval through the League office. This includes inquiries into wearing NBA, NCAA, HS, etc…we have LOGO PATCHES, let’s talk.

We are not the YMCA, MBA or JAM sports. If you want to hoop in ugly tee shirts, they have a league for you.

Slight uniform differences are okay but don’t go crazy whack funky, MC Hammer.

Just contact Gr3g with questions, sizing, lettering, etc. and we’ll work with you.
