Welcome to the Gr3g League, where competition meets community and respect for the game is at the heart of every matchup.
Below are the official rules and guidelines for both in-game play and off-court conduct in the BeerCityHoops 5v5 league.
In-Game Rules
Game Format
- Games are played on a full court with 5-on-5 teams.
- Teams must field at least 4 players. Games may be played 4v4 if necessary, or teams may allow substitutions.
- The first team to score 63 points wins, or the team ahead after 33 minutes is declared the winner.
- Each game is played with a 33-minute running clock.
Scoring
- Shots made inside the arc are worth 2 points.
- Shots made outside the arc are worth 3 points.
- Shots made beyond the special “3G” line (inside half-court circle) activate a “Make It, Take It” rule.
Possession and Play
- After a dead ball, the defense must always return the live ball to the offense behind mid-court to restart play.
- The offense may dribble, shoot, or pass to start play, reducing the risk of injuries from inbounds plays.
- Substitutions are only allowed during a dead ball.
Fouls and Timeouts
- Players are expected to “call your own” fouls.
- Avoid being a “violations czar” or an overzealous referee.
- Each team is allowed one 60-second timeout per game.
Defense and Strategy
- All half-court defensive strategies are permitted, though man-to-man defense is preferred.
- Ball movement is encouraged. Stalling in the final minutes is discouraged—open shots should be taken.
Overtime
- Overtime consists of 3 minutes and 33 seconds or ends when the first team scores 7 points.
- The home team shoots from the top of the key to determine possession at the start of overtime.
On/Off-Court Rules
Sportsmanship and Conduct
- Do it like Stuart Scott: “Be as cool as the other side of the pillow.”
- Show respect for the game, fellow players, opposing teams, and the gym facilities.
- Bring hustle to the court, not harm—remember, everyone has commitments off the court.
Safety and Behavior
- Any and all threatening behavior will result in immediate expulsion from the league.
- Know your scheduled game times and arrive on time.
- Teams will be given approximately 10 minutes to warm up before games.
- Stay off the court, including baselines, while live games are in progress.
