Year 6 of the Gr3g League will officially begin July 1 with new JERSEY rules

New player recruiting, trades & transactions begin today

Summer Hoops begins Tuesday June 19th at cherry park after 5p

The start of Year 6 (2025-26) is less than a month away!!

Go outside and play. INDOOR HOOPS RETURNS IN OCTOBER.

Are you keeping yourself in shape, any shape at all? I’m a beer barrel.

Don’t worry, it’s still golf season (see below for the 3G Challenge).

But if you’re ready to get to hooping, summer recruiting runs begin Tuesday June 19th at Cherry Park (Cherry/Eastern SE) sometime after 5p. Hopefully we’ll see you out at Cherry, Wilcox, Garfield, MLK or wherever we end up each week.

Check out the BeerCityHoops FB page if you don’t get the text messages.

These summer runs are YOUR recruiting season! It’s a real pain in the admin when players bring random newbies along to hoop. This happened in multiple Finals games this season.

Player are now eligible to seek “trades” or “free agent signings” but they must play NICE:

  1. NOTIFY League office that you have interest to switch teams.
  2. INITIATE Contact Teams to find a good fit, gauge interest, League prefers TRADE before FA Signing.
  3. CONFIRM The Details and Compensation, it is not finished until the League office signs off
  4. EXECUTE and Finalize the Deal by purchasing your new BeerCityHoops jersey through the League office.

Current players moving teams must pre-pay $77 fee to cover the cost of their new jersey.

As we move into Year 6, the League is making the following jersey requirements:

  • all players must have a custom BeerCityHoops jersey to participate in League play
  • each current player (Years 1-5) with their own custom BeerCityHoops jersey are now “lifetime” members of the League
  • these players, in good standing, will pay only gym dues each season (variable cost) before Week 1 (mid-October)
  • new players (your cost is $200, includes admin/season dues/jersey) and/or returning players ($77) without a BeerCityHoops jersey must purchase one through the league before membership is granted.

Players may design new jerseys on your own but will need approval through the League office. This includes inquiries into wearing NBA, NCAA, HS, etc…we have LOGO PATCHES, let’s talk.

We are not the YMCA, MBA or JAM sports. If you want to hoop in ugly tee shirts, they have a league for you.

Slight uniform differences are okay but don’t go crazy whack funky, MC Hammer.

Just contact Gr3g with questions, sizing, lettering, etc. and we’ll work with you.

City of Bridges wins Year 5

Repeat Champions!

City of Bridges completed a 3-0 Finals Series to take home their second consecutive Gr3g League championship.

After an opening week win over the Rhythm, the Blues stole a late victory in week two over the Hearts and finished the sweep with a confirmation of their title in a week three win over the Fire.

Year 5 & Finals MVP T-Roof led the way while D Nags, the league’s all-time leading scorer, scored the final points of Year 5.

Check out the action here

Year 5 Finals include City, Rhythm, Fire & Hearts

Round-Robin Finals begin This week

The regular season of is over and the Finals Series is set for the 2nd annual Gr3g League 4-Team Round-Robin Finals Event.

Last year’s champions City of Bridges returns to the Finals as the #1 seed after a 14-4 season. Last year’s runner-up Rhythm: River North finds themselves at 13-5 as the #2 seed. These two historic franchises will meet in Game One with a chance to secure the easiest path to the Year 5 Title.

The Bridge Street Fire secured the #3 seed with a 12-5 record and they’ll face off against the #4 seed West Leonard Hearts. The two newest teams to the league face off in a Ward 1 battle.

Winners of these games will face off in Week 2 of the Finals to secure the opportunity to go 3-0 and confirm the Championship.

In Week 3, the teams face off with the remaining unplayed opponent with everything on the line.

If multiple teams go 2-1, the first tiebreaker is total point differential in the Finals Series.

The second tiebreaker is 63-point victories in the Finals Series.

The third tiebreaker is total team 3Gs made in the Finals Series.

The fourth and final tiebreaker is Year 5 regular season victories.

Legends of the Lake announce plan to return for Year 6

The Legends of the Lake have announced that the team in gold & purple will return to the Gr3g League for Year 6 (2025-26) to

begin the Fall 2025 session.

Headlined by the return to the League of the original commissioner, Lost Ang3l.

Also known as LT the Referee to his YouTube subscribers, the soon-to-be 49-year-old will head up operations during the summer recruiting season for the Legends.

ON COURT Rules CHANGES of the Gr3g League, 2025

   EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY

As we move into the 2nd half of the 2024-25 season, the League Council has made some amendments to the ON COURT Rules of the Gr3g League that should provide for a better experience and more fluid gameplay.

The Council asks that all players take the time to read and understand the rules both on-court and off-court.

PLEASE GET YOUR TEAMMATES TO PAY UP THE $50 GYM DUES OWED OCTOBER 1st, 2024. It’s damn near January, yo!

If you’d like to continue to play with the League after April 1st, please make sure you’ve paid your LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP in full. Total cost is $163/player which includes those 2024 $50 gym dues most everyone has paid. Gym costs are rising, so membership and annual dues will rise in the fall of 2025, cost TBD.

Currently, 40+ players make up 6 teams. Some have been here since before Covid and/or thru the pandemic, some are brand new. No one deserves to leave the gym upset by anything more than a loss. This has not been the case recently. The amount of trash talk, confrontations and physical play has been rising consistently since October and it is a concern for the leadership of the League. We are not having any more of it.

On that note, Updated rules are as follows:

SUBS ONLY ALLOWED AT DEAD BALL, no more “hockey-style”.

EVERYONE SUBS OUT! when you have more than 5 players.

ELBOWS DOWN! PLAY WITHIN YOUR OWN PHONE BOOTH.

STOP FOULING BECAUSE YOU GOT BEAT ON D (this is such a huge problem).

INTENTIONAL FOULS WILL BE MET WITH IMMEDIATE EJECTION FROM THE GYM.

ANY EXCESSIVE PHYSICAL PLAY WILL BE MET WITH IMMEDIATE EJECTION FROM THE GYM.

MULTIPLE OCCURRENCES OF ANY OF THE ABOVE WILL DISQUALIFY THAT PLAYER PERMANENTLY.

“I’M DONE DEALING WITH THE BS. IF OLD-ASS GROWN FOLKS WANT TO ARGUE CALLS, GET MAD ALL THE TIME, GO PLAY SOMEWHERE ELSE. START YOUR OWN LEAGUE. I WANT TO HOOP WITH HOOPERS WHO LOVE THE GAME MORE THAN WINNING. COME HAVE FUN OR STAY HOME.” -gr3g

IN GAME

  • games are played on a full court in 5v5
  • teams must field 4 players (option of 4v4 or allowing subs)
  • first team to score 63 points wins OR whoever is ahead after 33 minutes
  • games are played on a 33-minute running clock
  • shots inside the arc are worth 2 points & outside are worth three points
  • shots made beyond our added “3G” line activate a “Make It, Take It”
  • at dead ball, defense ALWAYS returns LIVE BALL to offense BEHIND mid-court to restart
  • offense may dribble, shoot or pass to start play (thus limiting inbounds play injuries)
  • substitutions ONLY ALLOWED on a dead ball
  • “call your own” fouls; don’t be a “violations czar” or “overzealous ref”. the floor isn’t perfect, everyone travels.
  • each team receives one 60-second timeout
  • all HALF-COURT defensive strategies are allowed, MAN-TO-MAN is preferred
  • Move the ball! Just HOOP, please don’t stall in the final minutes. Open shots deserve to be taken.

OVERTIME RULES WILL CHANGE:

EACH TEAM’S 5 ON-COURT PLAYERS AT BUZZER SHOOT 3G’S AS A TEAM.

(HOME TEAM GETS OPTION OF SHOOTING FIRST OR SECOND.)

IF TIED AFTER ROUND 1, MAKE/MATCH SUDDEN DEATH 1-BY-1)

After April, we are capping the rosters at 8 players going forward while grandfathering in any team fully-paid with 9 or more. It’s just too many people to keep happy and to keep up with when the other team only has minimal or no subs.

There is a protocol to follow when inviting players to the League. Register on the website. Secure Membership. Pay dues. Meet with Leadership. No on-court play until after those requirements are met. No more random “they playin’ tonight” kind of shit.

Respect the League. Respect the rules. Respect your opponents. Respect yourself enough to cooperate.

Spectators need to stay IN THE BLEACHERS AT ALL TIMES. NO ONE SHOULD BE IN ANY CLASSROOM. ITEMS WERE STOLEN EARLIER THIS SEASON AROUND HALLOWEEN, IT WAS CANDY. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.

Children shouldn’t be running around the gym during games and MUST be accompanied by a parent/guardian for safety concerns and as a courtesy to the school and the League. Multiple players use this time to “get away from all that” and others have stated concern over the consistency of interruptions from the sidelines.

We never wanted to have this much information and rules to share, but it has come to that. Just play for fun, live your dream.

There ain’t no prize destination, so enjoy the journey.

OFF-COURT Rules of the Gr3g League

Thank you to everyone for your involvement in the League. Please remember we are here to bring joy and have fun, too!

ON/OFF-COURT Rules of BeerCityHoops 5v5 are as follows:

-Do it like Stuart Scott. “Be as cool as the other side of the pillow.”

-RESPECT the game, the players, other teams & the gym(s)

FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE RESPECT RULE WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE FORFEITURE OF MEMBERSHIP

-Bring hustle not the harm (we go to work off court, too)

-Know your scheduled game times; please Arrive on Time

-Teams will be given time (10-min?) to warm up before games

-Please stay off main court while live games are going on

TRADE RESCINDED (edit) Ligers and Nets settle up on a trade

This trade has been rescinded, retroactive to October 23rd, after Crain did not show up to games. His agent has not commented or responded.

Return of the Crain

The Roundball Ruckus Ligers have acquired the rights to Crain Wreck from the Sixth Street Nets in exchange for Gr3g, who recently passed 300 career points.

Crain’s return is still week-to-week. Gr3g has chosen to wear #15 for the Nets.

The roster changes goes into effect immediately.

Welcome to Year 5!

Week 1: promising futures are in

Welcome back to the Gr3g League!

Week one of Year 5 is here and we’re excited to bring you a full season of “dive bar” basketball.

Opening up the season with the 200th overall game, the City of Bridges returned to the court for the first time since hoisting the trophy after their 3-0 Final series run last season against their main rivals, the Roundball Ruckus Ligers. Coming into the game the Bridges led the all-time series 7-4.

The Ligers got out to an early lead, nearly gave it up late in the game and had to watch a game-tying buzzer-beating three by Money ricochet off the stanchion just to get the W.

City of Bridges notes:

  • D Nags played in his 50th league game and moved his points total to 407, both are BeerCityHoops records.
  • Kid A changed his number to #40.
  • Money surpassed 300 career points (307).
  • RossTy returned to the court after a season off following an Achilles injury.

Roundball Ruckus Ligers notes:

  • $ilky became the second player to surpass 350 career points (356).
  • Scotty J returned to the league after a season away.

The game consisted of the top-6 active scorers:

D Nags (407), Silky (356), B. Buckets (342), Kid A (333), Money (307) & Gr3g (291).

ACTIVE PLAYERS SCORING LIST

Game 2 tested the waters of the 2nd Ward as the Rhythm: River North versus the Sixth Street Nets.

The Rhythm return this season as the prohibitive favorite to challenge City for the title. Cope returns to Rhythm for another year of defensive annoyance (including a personal dislike of the expertise at his craft by this writer) with Trav & Parker still navigating the way. DJ Seven8z, a Year 1 champion with the now-retired Hawks returned to the mix, this time in Rhythm.

The Nets on the other hand, looked like your favorite show coming back for season 3 with a new supporting cast.

Rueben “Juice” moved to North Carolina. Bowen Arrows is out with an ankle injury. TK, Smitty and C Bake are retired for now. Word is Evinrude may also be out for the season after playing in Week 1.

Zach Baker & Greeny are back. Rookies joining the Nets in teal and purple are Jon V, For LeeS, B. Baker and JoJo.

The Rhythm showed off the size disparity early and often as they out rebounded the Nets 38-31, mirroring the 36-31 final score.

Game 3 brought together the two newest teams in the League, Ward 1 rivals West Leonard Hearts and Bridge Street Fire.

Coming off a 8-7 record in their inaugural BeerCityHoops season, the Hearts return all of their players and add rookies Eliseo and Frobe Huncho. This team of mostly guards can get to the hoop and shoot the three, sometimes doing too much of one or the other. Getting Hamlet involved in the middle will be key to their success.

The Fire put together a nearly brand new squad over the summer. Big Baby recruited Splash, added B (Ben) and BK off the free agent market, then trading for Hengy and the rights to his recruits Big Max and Powell. This team is bigger than most of the other teams but will need to gel quickly and get steady guard play to burn it up.
